As we approach Christmas in Inverness, a visit to the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd is a fun day out for all the family.
Reindeer were re-established in Scotland in 1952, after a long absence. The Cairngorm Mountains provide an ideal habitat, and the reintroduced reindeer have flourished there.
In Glenmore, at the heart of the Cairngorm National Park, is the Reindeer House – stocked with everything to do with reindeer, as well as tradiitonal Sami crafts from Sweden. The paddocks are wheelchair accessible, enabling everyone to see the reindeer, even without going on the hill trip.
If you do the hill trip you will be led by an experienced herder, and you will be able to hand feed the reindeer and walk freely amongst them.
Only an hour from Inverness, a visit to the reindeer herd in the Cairngorm National Park is a special day out.
Your Inverness bed & breakfast provider will be able to advise you on the times for hill visits to the herd. If you haven’t yet booked your Inverness accommodation, you will find a selection of the best B&Bs in Inverness by clicking here. For other ideas for fun days out in Inverness see our Attractions page, and the ICA page. If you’re looking for Christmas fun in Inverness see the Winter Festival calendar.

The Strathspey Railway near Inverness offers a wonderful opportunity to take a steam train journey through spectacular Strathspey.
The train sets off from its base at Aviemore, then continues through Boat of Garten and on to Broomhill, on a nostalgic 20 mile journey along part of the original Highland Railway. The beautiful landscape varies from moorland, through woods, and along the sweeping River Spey, with the Cairngorm Mountains providing a majestic backdrop. There is a tea and coffee service and full bar service on the train.
There are special events on the Strathspey Steam Railway throughout the year, with the pinnacle for many children being the Santa train, which runs on several dates from mid December. The Santa train is tremendously popular and advance booking is essential. The Mince Pie Specials, running just prior to and just after New Year, are a great way to enjoy a mince pie and festive drink while the train steams through the winter landscape.
There are also regular opportunities to dine in style on board the Strathspey Clansman or the Strathspey Highlander.
Aviemore is an easy 40 minute drive down the A9 from Inverness. Check the Inverness Guest House Association website for a selection of the best accommodation in Inverness, and for more ideas for great things to do in Inverness.

Loch Affric in autumn
Yesterday we spent a beautiful autumn afternoon walking in Glen Affric, one of the most beautiful places in the Highlands. It’s only about a 40 minute drive from Inverness to Glen Affric, but it’s as if one has been transported to another world – a magical world of lochs, waterfalls, mountains, and ancient woodland.

Loch Beinn a Mheadhoin, Glen Affric
Without the slightest of breezes to ruffle the water, the lochs were like glass. The trees were ablaze in their autumn glory, and the scarlet berries of the rowan trees were brilliant in the sunshine.
There are lots of different walks to do in Glen Affric - ranging from short trails along rocks and through woodland, or along forestry commission lanes, to longer hill walking treks. There are waterfalls at both Dog Falls and Plodda Falls.

Mountain views from Glen Affric
If you are planning a visit to Inverness and enjoy walking, try not to miss the enchantment of Glen Affric. Your Inverness B&B accommodation provider will be happy to give your directions on how to reach Glen Affric. In summer there is a bus service available, running right into the Glen. In winter the bus service goes as far as Cannich.
For anyone walking the glens around Inverness, check out our Inverness bed and breakfast association website for the best places to stay in Inverness.

Highland Free Spirits offer exclusive trips on Loch Ness on their luxurious fast flybridge motor cruiser. They can accommodate parties of up to 6 guests, visiting both well known spots such as Urquhart Castle or Dores Bay, as well as lesser known gems around the loch. Trips depart from Dochgarroch (where the northern most stretch of the Caledonian Canal meets Loch Ness), just a few miles south of Inverness.
Highland Free Spirits can provide daytime trips, evening excursions (enjoy watching the sun set over Fort Augustus), winter cruises(which can be enjoyed from the warmth of the centrally heated saloon!), and outings to celebrate a special occasion (even weddings!)
The cruiser is capable of speeds in excess of 30 knots for guests who like to feel the wind in their hair, or a more leisurely pace for those who prefer to proceed more gently!
Last year four of our guests from the US found their day out with Highland Free Spirits to be the highlight of their 2 week Scottish vacation. More recently (last weekend!) close friends enjoyed a fabulous day out exploring the beautiful hidden spots around Loch Ness, while enjoying a gourmet champagne lunch.
The fully qualified skippers and experienced crew carry a full inventory of saftey enquipment, and ensure that your trip is fun, enjoyable, and safe.
A Loch Ness cruise with Highland Free Spirits promises a highly rewarding and unforgettable excursion during your Highland vacation. Some of our Inverness B&B owners have personal experience of these wonderful cruises and we can recommend them unreservedly!

There are 3 really great pubs in Inverness city centre.
Hootannany on Church Street (serial winner of Inverness pub of the year) has live music in 3 bars every night of the week. The Ceilidh Bar on the ground floor has traditional folk and blues, Madhatters (upstairs) has alternative/rock, and the Bothy Bar has acoustic music. With Thai food (available in the Ceilidh Bar until 9 pm) and beer from the Black Isle Brewery, this makes for a great combination.
Blackfriars on Academy Street dates back to 1783 and is a traditional and unspoilt pub, offering a great selection of award winning cask ales (and features in the Good Beer Guide 2009) and excellent pub grub (available from 11 am to 9 pm daily). Blackfriars is also a great live music venue : “Traditional, folk, country, jazz, big band, rock and blues… something for every musical taste.”
The Castle Tavern, opposite Inverness Castle and overlooking the River Ness, is also a real ale pub with a great atmosphere. On sunny afternoons and evenings the attractive terrace is very popular, while the cosy bar downstairs and the upstairs restaurant (with great views, and serving food from 12 till 10 pm) also have a great buzz. The Castle Tavern hosts a real ale festival every September (along with another excellent pub, the Clachnaharry Inn, on the outskirts of town overlooking the Beauly Firth)

We are extremely lucky in Inverness as we have some excellent routes to cycle around taking in the beautiful local scenery. Our bed and breakfast Inverness is located just a couple of minutes ride from the Caledonian Canal and it is one of my favourite routes. You can cycle along the footpath beside the canal all the way to Dochgarroch which is a relaxing and peaceful 4 mile pedal. There’s a lovely village type green where you can sit on the benches and watch the boats pass through the lock or just study the array of different boats on their moorings. The return cycle is even better as it’s very slightly downhill and if the sun is shining the water in the canal displays a different shade of blue at every turn and mirrors both the sky and the hills perfectly.
Once back at Tomnahurich Bridge I could go straight home but instead I always turn right and head down to Whin Park, a nice place to rest the legs and more importantly enjoy an ice cream!! It’s then a leisurely ride along the River Ness towards Ness Islands passing the almost completed and impressive Inverness Archive Building. I cross over the bridge onto the Islands where on a warm and sunny day you regularly see the young lads jumping off into the River, a sight that seems to impress the visitors.
Ness Islands are great to walk or cycle through and we always recommend them to guests at our bed and breakfast. Inverness is lucky to have such a tranquil and beautiful retreat that you can amble through taking in the fast flowing river and the varied flora and fauna. Once off of the islands it’s a short ride along the riverside to the City Centre turning left over the road bridge and back along the opposite side along to Eden Court Theatre. From here it’s just a couple of minutes back to Avalon Guest House.
Whichever bed and breakfast, Inverness can offer visitors the chance to enjoy some of the many routes taking in the City and the local scenery. Bikes can be rented from Ticket To Ride and they will even deliver and collect them from where you are staying.

There have been numerous and frequent sightings recently of dolphins in the Moray Firth - primarily just off Chanonry Point, on the Black Isle (20 minutes drive from Inverness). Chanonry Point is believed to be the best location in the UK for regular sightings of bottlenose dolphins, which can often be seen just a few metres from the shore. There’s some debate as to when the best time to spot the dolphins is, but the majority consensus is on an incoming tide, particularly the hour or so before high tide. As the incoming tide is forced between the heads it brings with it a rich supply of food, attracting the dolphins to the waters at Chanonry Point. Directly across the water from Chanonry Point is Fort George - visitors to those magnificent fortifications often have the added bonus of being entertained by the dolphins. Check the tide table for high tides at Cromarty.
Ecoventures offer high quality dolphin spotting trips in the Moray Firth area, including Chanonry Point. Operating out of Cromarty, the trips are made in a RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat), and are approximately 2 hours long. They also offer up to date reports on recent dolphin sightings on their website.
