Last night we tried a great new restaurant in Inverness – Aspendos is a Turkish restaurant which opened 2 weeks ago in Queensgate.
The menu features an excellent variety of Mediterranean/Middle Eastern dishes. The meze for 2 offers 10 different starters and is excellent value. We tried lots of different dishes and they were all very flavoursome and delicious. Plenty of choice for both carnivore and vegetarian alike!
The owner, Mustafa, couldn’t have been more welcoming and his staff are friendly and attentive. In spite of only opening recently the restaurant was doing excellent business – word is obviously spreading fast about this most welcome addition to the Inverness restaurant scene.
If you’re visiting Inverness we recommend you try Aspendos – your Inverness B&B host will be only to happy to arrange a reservation on your behalf.

Moray Dolphins - British Synchronised Ice Skating Champions 2010 (Photo Keith Hayes)
The Inverness synchronised ice skating team, the Moray Dolphins, returned yesterday from the British Synchronised Ice Skating Championships in Sheffield as gold medal winners. The team not only achieved the highest marks awarded to any team during this year’s championships but also the highest awarded to any team over the last 3 years. They also won the Team of the Year Trophy and the Most Enjoyable Performance Trophy.
The team has been dogged by injuries and illness over the last few months, forcing a few long standing members to withdraw. In spite of this the girls have worked incredibly hard – including getting to the ice rink by 5.30 am every Sunday morning to practice.
The Inverness Ice Centre is the home to a number of different ice disciplines. In addition to synchronised skating, curling, figure skating, ice dancing, and ice hockey all take place there, with regular competitions in all these ice sports. The facilities are also open for public skating.
The Inverness Guest House Association has a number of best Inverness B and Bs in the vicinity of the Ice Centre (and the adjacent Queens Park Athletic Stadium, Bught Park football, rugby, hockey and shinty fields, the Sports Centre and the Aquadome. For a wide selection of the best accommodation in Inverness click on our Accommodation page.

Rock 4 Life 2010 featuring Status Quo has taken the decision to change venues from Bogbain Farm to Whiteness located approximately 20 minutes from Inverness between Ardersier and Nairn. Whiteness Property Company Ltd is donating the use of the site for the Rock 4 Life event which boasts stunning views overlooking the Moray Firth.
Event organisers worked closely with the Northern Constabulary and Highland Council to find solutions to the public safety issues due to the locality of the A9, however Caledonian Productions took the final decision this week to relocate. Caledonian Productions will be running a bus link from Inverness and the new venue location will have on-site parking facilities. Inverness Airport at Dalcross is also only a 10 minutes drive from the new venue.

The Inverness Courier has recently published an article reflecting widespread local concern on VisitScotland’s decision to close the Inverness Tourist Office over both Christmas and New Year. With both these holiday periods being popular times for people to visit Inverness, there was general surprise that VisitScotland made the decision to make tourist information services unavailable to visitors over both Christmas and New Year.
The Inverness Guest House Association is the leading organisation for Inverness accommodation providers, and is the only group whose members have all been quality assessed by the 2 grading organisations (VisitScotland and the Automobil Association).
IGHA spokesman, Brad Norris, articulated the disappointment of the IGHA bed and breakfast association members when he stated: “Everyone is entitled to enjoy the festivities but they do not need to be closed for that length of time. For New Year we have a lot of people coming and not just from the UK. It seems ridiculous for VisitScotland to spend so much on advertising and promoting Inverness in Europe and around the world and then, when they have hooked the tourists, they close all the services.”
The centre closed early on Christmas Eve for the festive celebrations and remained closed yesterday. It will reopen today but will close early again on New Year’s Eve for a further four days.
Mr Norris said the Christmas closures were reasonable but added: “It is the New Year ones that are an issue. That covers all the days we have guests staying and then they will re-open when all the tourists have gone.”
City councillors shared the dismay of Inverness accommodation providers, and there was scepticism at VisitScotland’s claim that the Christmas-New Year period is a quiet time in Inverness. VisitScotland claimed to be unaware of the widely publicised Inverness Hogmanay Party, for which 10,000 visitors were expected.
Since publication of the Inverness Courier article, anecdotal evidence has demonstrated that the New Year period was extremely busy, with many Inverness B&Bs and guest houses, restaurants and pubs all reporting doing excellent business over Hogmanay and the surrounding days.
Following the Courier article, VisitScotland underwent a change of heart and made a last minute decision to open the Tourist Office between 10 and 3 on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 January. In spite of the end of the Hogmanay Festivities and the severe weather, the office still received around 130 visitors, most of whom were concerned about travel arrangements and weather conditions.
It is hoped that VisitScotland makes the decision to keep the Inverness Tourist Office open for the next winter holiday season, at least for the busy build up to Hogmanay, New Year’s Day and the days immediately following.

Unfortunately the Inverness Hogmanay Party was cancelled last night due to the terrible weather conditions. With more heavy snow falling all day road conditions became treacherous and police were concerned with the safety of revelers attempting to travel to Inverness. It is such a shame as so much work went in to organising the event and locals and visitors alike were looking forward to seeing the Red Hot Chilli Pipers and the Peatbog Fairies perform.
Inverness Guest House Association would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and congratulate Gerry Reynolds and his team at the Highland Council for organising such an impressive array of events both in the Inverness Summer Festival and the Inverness Winter Festival. Inverness has benefited greatly from the extra business gained from visitors and tourists from around the world traveling to Inverness to attend the events and we look forward to more of the same in 2010.

It’s just been announced that Rod Stewart is to play a concert in Inverness, performing at the Caledonian Thistle Stadium on 17 July 2010.
All 18,000 tickets for the event are expected to sell out quickly, according to the Press and Journal, with more than half sold within days of the announcement. Tickets are available from TicketMaster.
As happened for the Elton John concert at the Caledonian Thistle Stadium in 2007, there will be huge pressure on accommodation in Inverness, as the concert takes place during the peak summer season. Concert goers are urged to book their Inverness accommodation now. If you’re planning to visit Inverness for the Rod Stewart concert, take the opportunity to spend a few days enjoying the Highland capital. The Inverness Guest House Association website has plenty of information on things to do in Inverness, Inverness restaurants, Highland castles, what’s on in Inverness, shopping in Inverness, Highland attractions and historic sites, Inverness entertainment and Highlands golf.
