On Thursday four of us enjoyed dinner at Johnny Foxes Pub and Restaurant – it was great!
Courgette and white wine soup, served in a baked bap, was delicious. Two of us had fillet steak – tender, tasty and cooked just as ordered – you wouldn’t find better anywhere. The fish (haddock) and chips was also first rate. We had a very palatable bottle of Chilean red wine with our meal. The service from barman Tyce was excellent – friendly and efficient.
Johnny Foxes has live music every evening, with with the finest bands offering a wide range of Popular, Traditional, Scottish and Irish music.
Adjoining Johnny Foxes is the newest addition to the Inverness club scene, the Den, offering fabulous cocktails, tapas, and great music.
Johnny Foxes is in a great riverside location near the centre of Inverness. Your Inverness B&B host will be happy to give you more information and to reserve a table for you. For a great selection of top Highland accommodation take a look at our Inverness guest house and bed & breakfast association website.

Last night we tried a great new restaurant in Inverness – Aspendos is a Turkish restaurant which opened 2 weeks ago in Queensgate.
The menu features an excellent variety of Mediterranean/Middle Eastern dishes. The meze for 2 offers 10 different starters and is excellent value. We tried lots of different dishes and they were all very flavoursome and delicious. Plenty of choice for both carnivore and vegetarian alike!
The owner, Mustafa, couldn’t have been more welcoming and his staff are friendly and attentive. In spite of only opening recently the restaurant was doing excellent business – word is obviously spreading fast about this most welcome addition to the Inverness restaurant scene.
If you’re visiting Inverness we recommend you try Aspendos – your Inverness B&B host will be only to happy to arrange a reservation on your behalf.

If you’re planning to visit Inverness and are looking for a great restaurant, I can highly recommend Sutor Creek Cafe in Cromarty.
This super little restaurant is only a half hour drive from Inverness, and is situated near the sea front in the picturesque and historic little town of Cromarty (right next to Ecoventures Dolphin Tours).
Chef Colin and front-of-house manager Sarah have created a quirky little place selling top notch food in a relaxed environment. The restaurant has a great seaside feel to it, and is reminiscent of the beach-side restaurants more commonly found in California and the Antipodes. Striking original artwork (some of which is for sale) by locally based artist Rosie Newman lines the walls.
The restaurant has a wood fired pizza oven, used to cook the delicious in-house pizzas. The oven is put into service to slow roast meat for Sunday lunch – and you will not find roast meat more tender or tasty anywhere. No wonder the restaurant was named in The Independent newspaper as one of the 50 best places in the UK for Sunday lunch! The daily changing menus also feature fresh salads, plenty of fish dishes (utilising the freshest, locally caught catch of the day), and a tantalising selection of dishes from around the world. The ingredients are fresh, seasonal, and organic. The wine list and the beer are also organic (though only the beer is local – from the Black Isle Brewery - as there aren’t too many vineyards in the north of Scotland!
Check the website for opening hours (more restricted – Friday to Sunday – during the winter months).
Your Inverness B&B host will be happy to offer more information and directions for finding Cromarty. For a selection of the best bed and breakfast accommodation in Inverness, click on the Inverness Guest House Association website. The members of our Inverness bed and breakfast association have all been quality assessed and graded by the Automobile Association or by Visit Scotland, and all offer excellent Highland accommodation.

River Ness
River Cafe & Restaurant in Inverness is located on the banks of the River Ness at 10 Bank Street with great views of the water.
The cuisine is excellent and is made using fresh, local produce and is served in a relaxed and well laid out dining room with contemporary decor. Having sampled the Prawn & Mussel Stew I can strongly recommend ordering this especially if you, like myself, are a keen seafood fan.
If you are booking accommodation in Inverness ask your hosts to reserve a table for you!!

Lorraine and I had lunch at Rocpool on the river last Thursday. It’s always been a great favourite of ours and our most recent lunch there was no exception. (Rocpool on the river is the original Rocpool, and should not be confused with the boutique hotel on Culduthel Road, known as Rocpool Reserve, which is unconnected).
We were looked after brilliantly by Steven (the owner), who presented us with glasses of champagne to celebrate Lorraine and Koshal’s marriage in August. Our meals were fabulous – the high point for me was my main course, which was unusual but most delicious – parmesan creme brulee with wild mushrooms, pinenuts and asparagus – yum yum!
While we were at Rocpool we chatted to a lovely couple at the adjacent table – Jane and Alan Hunter, owners of the charming Archiestown Hotel. We recommend this highly regarded hotel to visitors to that part of Morayshire.
Rocpool was, as always, absolutely buzzing – we knew it would be so had made an advance reservation. If you’re staying in Inverness and want to dine at Rocpool, do let your Inverness B&B host make a reservation for you. (Several days notice is advisable, especially at weekends). Several of our Inverness bed and breakfast association properties are situated just a few minutes walk from Rocpool. Check out the Inverness accommodation website for our selection of great B&Bs and guest houses in Inverness.

Oakwood Restaurant at Dochgarroch is just a few minutes drive from Inverness and close to Loch Ness. Gaby and Gus are the owners of Oakwood and they are a lovely and interesting couple.
The menu is uncomplicated and unpretentious and the dishes are all made with high quality, local produce cooked to perfection by Gaby who without doubt is incredibly skilled in presentation. Everything looks and tastes so good and even a simple salad arrives at the table looking like a spring garden flavour to perfection with a beautiful vinegrette.
Oakwood is frequented regularly by locals which is always a strong recommendation but if you are staying at a bed and breakfast in Inverness or nearby you really must give it a try.
For more information visit the Oakwood Restaurant Website.

We ate at the Cinnamon Restaurant in Millburn Road Inverness a few days ago and as usual the food and service were excellent. It is now one of Inverness’s premier Indian restaurants and specialises in authentic Bangladeshi and Indian cuisine. They have an extensive menu including classic dishes such as Dhansak, Madras and Vindaloo as well as several innovative signature dishes.
If you live locally or you are on holiday at an Inverness B&B and haven’t yet eaten at the Cinnamon you must give it a try!!

There are 3 really great pubs in Inverness city centre.
Hootannany on Church Street (serial winner of Inverness pub of the year) has live music in 3 bars every night of the week. The Ceilidh Bar on the ground floor has traditional folk and blues, Madhatters (upstairs) has alternative/rock, and the Bothy Bar has acoustic music. With Thai food (available in the Ceilidh Bar until 9 pm) and beer from the Black Isle Brewery, this makes for a great combination.
Blackfriars on Academy Street dates back to 1783 and is a traditional and unspoilt pub, offering a great selection of award winning cask ales (and features in the Good Beer Guide 2009) and excellent pub grub (available from 11 am to 9 pm daily). Blackfriars is also a great live music venue : “Traditional, folk, country, jazz, big band, rock and blues… something for every musical taste.”
The Castle Tavern, opposite Inverness Castle and overlooking the River Ness, is also a real ale pub with a great atmosphere. On sunny afternoons and evenings the attractive terrace is very popular, while the cosy bar downstairs and the upstairs restaurant (with great views, and serving food from 12 till 10 pm) also have a great buzz. The Castle Tavern hosts a real ale festival every September (along with another excellent pub, the Clachnaharry Inn, on the outskirts of town overlooking the Beauly Firth)

If you are staying in Inverness in the next few weeks make sure you eat at the Mustard Seed or The Kitchen. Guests are eating in these restaurants and are reporting to us at breakfast just what great meals and service they’ve received the night before. If you’re wanting to eat at either on a Friday or Saturday night we recommend you book well in advance or if you are staying at a bed and breakfast in Inverness the owners will be happy to book a table for you. Both restaurants have an excellent variety of dishes on their menus and there is something to suit everyone.
