Things to do around Inverness – the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd

As we approach Christmas in Inverness, a visit to the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd is a fun day out for all the family.

Reindeer were re-established in Scotland in 1952, after a long absence. The Cairngorm Mountains provide an ideal habitat, and the reintroduced reindeer have flourished there.

In Glenmore, at the heart of the Cairngorm National Park, is the Reindeer House – stocked with everything to do with reindeer, as well as tradiitonal Sami crafts from Sweden. The paddocks are wheelchair accessible, enabling everyone to see the reindeer, even without going on the hill trip.

If you do the hill trip you will be led by an experienced herder, and you will be able to hand feed the reindeer and walk freely amongst them.

Only an hour from Inverness, a visit to the reindeer herd in the Cairngorm National Park is a special day out.

Your Inverness bed & breakfast provider will be able to advise you on the times for hill visits to the herd.
