The Strathspey Railway near Inverness offers a wonderful opportunity to take a steam train journey through spectacular Strathspey.
The train sets off from its base at Aviemore, then continues through Boat of Garten and on to Broomhill, on a nostalgic 20 mile journey along part of the original Highland Railway. The beautiful landscape varies from moorland, through woods, and along the sweeping River Spey, with the Cairngorm Mountains providing a majestic backdrop. There is a tea and coffee service and full bar service on the train.
There are special events on the Strathspey Steam Railwaythroughout the year, with the pinnacle for many children being the Santa train, which runs on several dates from mid December. The Santa train is tremendously popular and advance booking is essential. The Mince Pie Specials, running just prior to and just after New Year, are a great way to enjoy a mince pie and festive drink while the train steams through the winter landscape.
There are also regular opportunities to dine in style on board the Strathspey Clansman or the Strathspey Highlander.
Aviemore is an easy 40 minute drive down the A9 from Inverness. Check the Inverness Guest House Association website for a selection of the best accommodation in Inverness, and for more ideas for great things to do in Inverness.
