Railcards

There is no getting away from the fact that our railways are expensive, but it is possible to cut the cost of your travel with a 16-25 railcard. This little card, which you can also use digitally on your phone or tablet gets you a third off of any train journey that you make. They cost £30 for one year or £70 if you go for the three-year option, but you can get a discount off of this with your NUS card. You can also buy your travel card for the year with £15 worth of Tesco Club Card Vouchers. Simply swap your vouchers online with Tesco then enter the promo codes that they send you onto the railcard website, and you’re done.

Coach

When it comes to cheap student travel, coaches might be a good option. They offer cheap journeys and even allow you to use your NUS card to get a good discount. They offer fares from as little as £1 and they are extremely comfortable and offer great facilities such as free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and charging points. Sure, your journey might take a little longer but you’ll get the opportunity to sit back, relax and gaze out of your window to see what Scotland and the rest of the UK have to offer.

Young Person’s Coach Card

If you plan to travel by coach often, it might be worth purchasing a young person’s coach card. Operated by National Express, this card works very much in the same way as the 16-25 railcard. The card costs £12.50 for a year or £30 for three years and it gets you one third off your standard coach tickets. Plus you get 20% off your bill at Pizza Hut when you show your coach card, you can travel and dine in style.

NEC Card

Young people living in Scotland are entitled to apply for a National Entitlement Card (NEC). So long as you are aged between 11 and 26 and live in the country, even if it’s just while you are completing your study you are eligible to receive this little card that is full of discounts. The best bit when it comes to your travels is that it entitles you to 20% off you fares with Scottish City Link Coaches, helping you travel around the country as much as you want. There are also discounts offered on food shopping, restaurants and at many attractions, plus the card doubles up as a proof of age, meaning that you won’t have to carry around other ID to help you get served at the bar.
